Guarded by Robomen, the Doctor and Ian were standing in what had once been the Chelsea Helicopter Port - Heliport for short.  It was a wide stretch of open tarmac, surrounded by ruined buildings.  Towering tabove them rose the immense gleaming shape of the Dalek spaceship.  Together with a group of other prisoners, the Doctor and Ian were being held at the foot of a ramp which led up into the ship.  Dalek patrols glided to and fro, guarding the perimeter of the Heliport.

Ian moved closer to the Doctor. 'Why are they keeping us waiting about here?' he whispered.

'I imagine this is an assembly point, my boy.  They're going to take all their prisoners on board at once.'  The Doctor nodded towards the other side of the Heliport.  A group of Robomen were marching two more prisoners to join the main group.

Ian looked round at his fellow captives.  They were grimy, ragged and defeated-looking.  He turned back to the Doctor.  'I still don't understand all this.  The Daleks were destroyed.  We were there on Skaro, we saw it happen.'

Sadly the Doctor shook his head.  'The devastation may not have been as complete as we imagined.  The Daleks have incredible tenacity, tremendous powers of survival.  There may have been other colonies, on other parts of Skaro...'  He looked at the scene around them, the ruined city, the enormous spaceship, the blank-faced, helmeted Robomen standing guard over their prisoners.  'Anyway, however it happened, the Daly have survived.  And they've evolved too.'

Ian studied one of the Daleks as it glided past.  'I see what you mean.  These do look a bit different.  I wonder if that's got anything to do with their increased power of movement.  On Skaro they could only travel in their own metal city.'

'Quite true.  But this is an invasion force, remember.  They've found ways to adapt themselves to new planets.  Something on the hover-craft principle I should imagine.'

By now the two newcomers had been herded across to the main group.  They were tough looking characters, one tall and wiry, the other short and thickset.  Ian thought they looked less cowed than the other prisoners.  A Dalek glided up to the Robomen guards accompanying them.  'Where are the other members of your patrol?'

In a slurred emotionless voice one of the Robomen answered, 'These men killed them both.'

Angrily the Dalek spun round, its gun-stick pointing at the prisoners.  'What are your names?'

'Bill Craddock,' said the taller man defiantly.

With equal truculence the thick-set man said, 'And I'm Mick Thompson.  Want to p[ut us in your hall of fame, do you?'

The Dalek's eye stalk swivelled towards them.  'Craddock and Thomson,' it repeated.  'You will be punished for your crimes.  Robomen, continue your patrol.'

The Robomen moved away, and the Dalek addressed the group of prisoners.  'You will remain here without moving until it is time to enter the ship.'

THE DALEKS ARE BACK!

The TARDIS materializes in London - but Ian and Barbara have not returned home. The streets are deserted; buildings are crumbling.
But the city is not as empty as it seems. Robotized humans stalk the decaying streets, searching for the few beleaguered freedom fighters; and from their flying saucer in Trafalgar Square the Daleks plan the subjugation of the peoples of the world and the transformation of the planet into a giant spaceship.

Classic chapter title - Return to Terror (and a slow start but both chapters 12 and 13 are one-worders with a !, bringing the total to 3/14 on the exclamatiometer).

The original Target edition was published by W. H. Allen / Wyndham (the first time W. H. Allen appeared on one of the novels).

The novelisation was released on its own in hardback on two occasions, in 1977 (Allan Wingate) and 1978 (W. H. Allen / Longbow). The second impression had ISBN 0 491 02124 0 and cost £2.95. Both editions had the original Achilleos artwork.

From 1984 onwards, editions were numbered 17 in the Doctor Who library.

This was one of three novels brought together to form the Dalek Omnibus, published by W. H. Allen and released exclusively in hardback in 1983. The other two novels (also by Terrance Dicks) were Doctor Who and the Day of the Daleks and Doctor Who and the Planet of the Daleks. Despite the listing on the back of the book, the stories were printed inside in the order of transmission. The standard size (for the W. H. Allen releases) hardback cost £6.95. The copyright notice inside this edition refers to the title of the television script as The World's End which was in fact the title of the first episode, a mistake that originated with the 1973 Radio Times Doctor Who special.

The novel was paired with Doctor Who and the Crusaders in August 1998 and released by W. H. Allen under the Star Books label as one of their Doctor Who Classics range.

The original Target edition was published by W. H. Allen / Wyndham (the first time W. H. Allen appeared on one of the novels). It was reprinted later in 1977, in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982 (twice - £1.35) and 1984 (twice - £1.50). ISBN 0 426 11244 X. It was finally completely rejackted in 1990 when it was published by Virgin, priced £2.50, same ISBN.
Cover Data
Due to the sparcity of suitably dramatic photographs from the TV serial made available to the artist, Achilleos used images from the 1966 film Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150AD. Hence the Roboman and Dalek spaceships on the cover are unlike those seen in the television version upon which the book is based.

Between 1977 and 1984, the logo changed from orange to blue.

For the German edition of Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth, the publishers approached British artist David Hardy to do the cover. Hardy's SF works were extremely popular in Germany, hence the choice. The artist also painted planet scapes for the second series of Blake's 7. He was featured in Marvel Magazine's 'Starburst' (number 81) in May 1985, from where this double page spread was taken which includes the magnificent Dalek cover artwork.

Despite being a first Doctor adventure, and with no mention of it anywhere within the book, the Doctor is seen wearing a long, multi-coloured scarf on the cover of the French edition, artwork by Penichoux.

The artwork for the Star Books Doctor Who Classics release in 1988 used Andrew Skilleter's cover artwork for the Dalek Omnibus.

Alister Pearson's magnificent 1990's artwork was also used on the BBC Video release. Originally it did not feature Big Ben, but BBC Video requested the famous landmark be added. The backcover blurb contains some factual errors: the Dalek saucer is located at Chelsea Heliport and not Trafalgar Square and, by 1977, Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth was hardly one of his earliest novelizations (it was actually his fifteenth).
Foreign Editions
The novel was translated into German as Doctor Who - Kampf um die Erde (which translates as Struggle for the Earth) in the early 1980's, by Schneider-Buch, based in Munich. Another version was released in 1989 by Goldmann Books as Doctor Who Und Das Komplott Der Daleks.

A French version by Éditions Garancière was released in May 1987 under the title Docteur Who - Les Daleks envahissent la Terre. The translation was by Roland C. Wagner and the adaptation was by Corine Derblum. The ISBN was 2.7340.0203.5. It was number 4 in a series of 8.
Reviews
"Terrance Dicks always has been and always will be, to my mind, the best of the Target authors. This was conclusively proved with the latest in his long line of classics, Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth... One thing that probably made this book was the characterisation of the Doctor, it was even better than David Whitaker's attempts."
- Chris Duke, 'Tardis' (number 5), July 1977

"Terrance Dicks does his usual workmanlike job of adapting the teleplay to novel form. As the Who-novelist with the longest and closest association to the series, Dicks has a remarkable basic understanding of the program's premise and of its characters."
- Patrick Daniel O'Neill, 'Doctor Who' (Vol. 1, No. 13),

Star

Doctor Who and the Crusaders was paired with Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth and released as one of Star Books' Doctor Who Classics range in August 1988. The ISBN for this particular combination was 0 352 32264 0 and it cost £2.95. The Classics series stretched over 12 months and saw releases for each of the first four Doctors. The books were made by fixing together two of the Target books with a new front page and wraparound cover.

The Skilleter artwork cover was originally painted for the Dalek Omnibus release in 1983.

Germany

The novel was translated into German as Doctor Who - Kampf um die Erde (Struggle for the Earth) in 1981, by Schneider-Buch. It was translated by Ulla Neckenauer and had a cover by British artist David Hardy. The ISBN was 3 505 07302 4. It followed Schneider-Buch's publication of Planet of the Daleks in 1980.

The publishers approached British artist David Hardy to do the cover as Hardy's SF works were extremely popular in Germany. Hardy had been painting space-related artwork since 1954 when he collaborated with astronomer Patrick Moore. The artist also painted planet scapes for the second series of Blake's 7. He was featured in Marvel Magazine's 'Starburst' (number 81) in May 1985, from where this double page spread was taken. More of his work (including the Dalek cover) can be seen in the 2001 Paper Tiger publication Hardyware (ISBN 185 58591 73).

  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my goodreads icon goodreads page. I almost never do reviews, but I use this site to catalogue books.
See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
